OK, so we most likely won't meet any Lotus Eaters or run into Cyclops, but there will be lots of music, drums, dancing and ...maybe even some sheep and sirens...

Come on, it'll be FUN!

Sabbinirica!  Welcome!  So glad you stopped by.  Remember when you were a child how you collected shells as you  wandered along the beach? I still do that...and I do the same with songs...Sicilian songs...

So, c'mon, wander along with me...

“Sometimes, you just have to put it out there and let the universe do the rest.”   Those words hung in the air a bit then and while my brain just couldn’t process them, my heart quickly absorbed them. I was listening to the counsel of my friend, film-maker Steven Robert McCurdy.  He had come to the East Coast to screen his film, ‘Postcards From Italy.’  Those of us who ventured out on that cold winter’s night were treated to Steve’s tender and heartfelt film homage to Southern Italy and her people.

Ancestors, reposted from June 12, 2014

Sunday at dusk in a lush and verdant garden aglow with fireflies,  I sat next to the mbira master, Chartwell Dutiro , and experienced a kinship transcending time and cultures. I had come to hear his concert and was fortunate to have a few moments to speak with him. We shared our tradtions and stories about our work with them. He spoke about the mbira as a means of communication with the ancients. In the Shona culture, it is as a telephone to the ancestors.  Chartwell counseled me to speak to my…

Hasn't this chick's phone battery run out yet? She's been talking non stop since she got on the bus an hour ago.

Random Thoughts from the Countryside

Is there a limit to how many fresh prickly pears a person can eat in one sitting? Looks like am about to find out...

Instead if destroying the magic, watching the mechanics of pressing olive oil only renders the entire process even more miraculous.

How long after I take the clothes off the clothes-line will they still smell so fresh?

That's it! If one more Sicilian man tells me that gaining 5 or 10 kilos would actually be GOOD for me, I am packing it up and moving here forever.

Must remember that to a…

Random Thoughts from Catania Fontanarossa Airport:

Was worried about finding Terminal 1 - then realized: this whole airport IS Terminal 1.

Ahhhh... The Kabuki Theatre that is security check-in...

Continuing a tradition from my youth: enjoying a cappuccino and cornetto in the airport before my morning flight back to NYC.
(In reality, it's a way to squeeze a few extra moments-in-Italy out of a trip.)

They keep us waiting in front of the Duty Free shops so we piss away our left over euros. spend.

Did I really just buy a deluxe set…
