From the recording Terra Sangue Mare
The text and melody are from the tradition of the carters, the men who drove carts pulled by horse or mule and transported goods throughout Sicily. As they traveled, they sang, developing a particular style of singing. This tradition became a part of their social activity and they would hold competitions among the carters to see who was the best singer. This song was researched and documented by folklorist, singer and author Elsa Guggino, 1968, Folkstudio, Catologo delle Raccolte 1966-1970
