WORKSHOPS:
Sicilian Frame Drum- instruction on the techniques of traditional the Sicilian Frame Drum. Students learn an array of Sicilian drumming traditions as the lesson progressively builds techniques and rhythms.
Each class includes brief history of the dances, a warm-up and introduction to the particular rhythms of the accompanying music and instruction on the steps particular to the dances. As these traditional, yet current, dances are an expression and celebration of community, the focus of the workshop is for the students to experience the joy and fun of dancing as a collective.
Sicilian Folk Dance-active participation class open to all levels of ability. Students are instructed in folk dances specific to Sicily, learning not only how to dance the steps, but how to distinguish variations recognize the melodies identified with these dances.
Tarantella-active participation class open to all levels of ability. A brief historic overview of the Tarantella is presented then a traditional tarantellas Southern Italy will be taught to the students. The instruction and dancing can be accompanied by live music. NB Although these dances are traditional with ancient roots, they are still current, popular, and danced today at events and celebrations throughout Italy.
